As a part of our Constellation Operations Engineering team, your responsibilities are expected to be wide ranging, spanning many different aspects of the constellation architecture including satellite systems, ground stations, and ground software. Specifically, you will train to operate the satellites, while providing informed recommendations and mentorship on procedure and process improvement from previous space operations experience. In this role, you will help ensure successful on-orbit satellite commissioning by serving in a leadership role in launch and early operations activities. Additionally, you will ensure the operations team is ready to support launch and early operations activities, serve as a leader in anomaly resolution and troubleshooting, and work to ensure the health of the satellites on-orbit during steady-state operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Complete the training and qualification program to become certified as a Constellation Operator.
  • Serve in an operations leadership role, with ownership over on-orbit spacecraft performance and anomaly investigation activities. Aggressively flow findings up to the Flight Director.
  • Provide experience-based guidance related to process purpose and be the safety check for all procedures implemented
  • Define processes and procedures for on-orbit operations for nominal and anomaly scenarios
  • Collaborate with ground software team to define, implement, and test software tools and services focused on autonomous operations
  • Continue to develop a "constellation at scale" mindset and strive to develop/contribute to products that will facilitate operating a large constellation of satellites autonomously
  • Participate in launch and early operations activities for BlackSky satellite launches, with occasional non-traditional work schedules required (short-term 24/7 operations and on-call support)
  • Develop and execute design verification activities across constellation segments, including spacecraft, ground stations, and ground/flight software

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in aerospace, aeronautical, astronautical or mechanical engineering preferred, or a related engineering or science discipline
  • Minimum 4+ years technical professional experience
  • Minimum 2+ years in a space operations environment (satellite or launch vehicle)
  • Expertise in one or more satellite subsystems (ADCS, C&DH, Comms, EPS, Payload, or Propulsion). Knowledge of RF ground systems preferred.
  • Leadership roles in prior projects, with a demonstrated ability to take ownership over projects and tasks
  • Possess strong team and inter-team cooperation and organization skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong understanding of audience
  • Ability to sustain a workload effectively which has several concurrent independent activities
  • Expertise in one or more satellite subsystems (ADCS, C&DH, Comms, EPS, Payload, or Propulsion). Knowledge of RF ground systems preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder)

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with STK, Linux, and Python highly desired
  • Experience with the operation of autonomous systems preferred

As a senior engineer, you will be expected to grow in one or more of these fields of expertise:

  • Develop expert level of knowledge on one or more Global satellite subsystems
  • Champion autonomous operations, contributing to requirements definition and spearheading projects to minimize human-in-the-loop operations.
  • Process/written procedure improvement based on experience with best practices in a space operations environment
  • Potential to grow into the responsibilities of Flight Director, accountable for planning and execution of daily activities against the constellation
